Baptism

Priest with ChildBaptism marks the beginning of a journey with God which continues for the rest of our lives — the first step in response to God's love.  It is a joyful moment when we rejoice in what God has done for us in Jesus Christ, making serious promises and declaring what we believe.  In the Church of England it is common to Baptise young children and then parents and God parents make declarations on behalf of the child; sometimes this is known as christening. However, a person can be baptised at any stage of their life.

If you are thinking of Baptism for your child, then we are delighted to help you. Your child is precious to you and precious to God and Christ Baptismin Baptism, you as parents are thanking God for his gift of life and making a commitment to start your child on the journey of faith in Jesus Christ.  This is an important event in your child's life and it is important that you and the God parents fully understand the significance of the promises you will make.  Consequently there is a requirement for you to meet with other parents and members of our clergy team to fully investigate the meaning of Baptism within the Church.  Therefore, please do not make any plans regarding dates and parties, until you have spoken with us.

FontBaptisms take place at each of our three churches: St. Michaels and All Angels in Canon Square, St Andrews in Forest and at St. Barnabas in Beanacre, normally during one of the morning services.  This is because Baptisms are a public declaration that your child has become part of the Church family. It is important that the Church congregation is there to support you and welcome your child. In turn the Church will promise to support and pray for you and your Child.

If you decide that you would like your child Baptised, then please telephone Nettie Hucknall on 01225 791977. She will take your details, and pass on your details to the relevant Baptism visitor to arrange a convenient time to be visited in your home so that you can discuss what is involved in more detail.

If after meeting with a member of the clergy you decide that you would rather not have a Baptism Service but would still like to thank God for His gift of the life of your child, a Thanksgiving Service can be arranged. This is similar to a Baptism Service but without the water!  If, at a later stage, your child makes the decision that they would like to be Baptised, a service can then be arranged.
